Before spending any money, I like to browse around and see if I can find something similar, maybe even better, for free. I looked through A LOT of remote backup services, but none of them were on par with Carbonite. However... I did manage to find some that were worth checking out.
You can get a free account that will hold 25 GB of your stuff! That's great for free, and the user interface and features look nice enough. The storage is secure, but you have the option of sharing files, and everything can be accessed through a web browser for easy file recovery.
What's the catch?
The catch to the free account is not the 25 GB of storage, but the 100 MB of allowed downloads. So if your computer crashes and you need to download 20 GB of stuff, you'll need to upgrade your membership to a standard account. Not hard, but that will cost $10 per month!
All in all, it's worth joining. If you end up needing to download your backups, the upgraded membership is much cheaper than data recovery! Click here to sign-up with Streamload.
Another option is with VMN Storage. VMN offers plans including a free option for 1 GB of storage.
DropBoks is like an online drop box. It offers 1 GB of free file storage and uses a very simple upload form to back up your files.
Hotmarx is a research tool designed to help you store, organize and share bookmarks, files and notes related to your field of interest. Not only can you use it for social bookmarking, but you can use the 1 GB of space for free online file storage.
One last option, which is quite interesting, is the GMail Drive. Simply put, it lets you use a Google GMail account as a hard drive for file storage. The software is free and GMail is free (for about 3 GB of storage space!)
But remember, these services are still limited, and the upgraded memberships can get pricey. For that reason, I still recommend Carbonite and Mozy. They are full featured, easy to use, and cost just $5 per month for totally unlimited use. Click the banner below to sign-up for a free trial:
