Don't want to backup your files online?
That's understandable. You might just want to back them up to another computer on your network. But if catastrophe hits, it's nice to have a remote backup!
That said, there are plenty of reasons to look at this software. For one, it's free!
Let's get started...
SyncBack lets you backup and restore files, encrypt them for security, and compress them to conserve space.
Sounds good, but those are the features of the paid version. The freeware is good, but it lacks really cool advanced features. But for free, it can't hurt to try it. (Note: It does NOT come with spyware. It's actually a "no-install" program.)

Comparator is an interesting backup and synchronization program, because it offers a file comparison tool. It will list the changes between two media (perhaps your hard drive and an external drive,) presenting you the Missing files, those that are Newer and those that are Duplicate from both media selected. You can select which files to copy over to the other media, or copy them all in one go.
Note: Free, unrestricted program for evaluation. $29.95 after trial period.

Just specify a list of directories, and Autobackup will back up those files at the end of each day (or whenever you prefer.) If you ever run into trouble, you can restore everything, or just one specific file.
A Pro version is available for $25 if you wish.

Back up a list of files you choose, and get them automatically compressed into a ZIP folder. You can run scheduled backups and even password-protect the generated zip folders.
Restoration is not supported. You'll have to unzip the files and move them around (as necessary) on your own.

Lou Backup is a simple backup tool developed to backup Visual C source files. It creates a directory for each backup, can backup multiple projects at once, exclude directories and files per project and per backup set, and backup only modified projects/files.
Very simple, and totally free.

But remember, the freeware is still limited, and you have to pay to upgrade. You also miss out on the remote backup. For that reason, I still recommend Carbonite. It's full featured, easy to use, and costs just $5 per month.
